About Our Project

Geeks for Kids, a program of the LEARN Science & Math Club, empowers children with mobility challenges by designing and building custom electric cars and assistive devices. Each creation gives kids greater freedom, independence, and the opportunity to move and play.

Before starting school, many of these children have limited access to mobility devices because insurance providers assume their parents can simply carry them or use strollers. Even after they begin school, many still struggle to obtain the wheelchairs or walkers due to a lack of insurance or because their insurance provider won't cover higher-cost equipment. These delays lead to significant physical, cognitive, and social setbacks. It's essential for these kids to be active as early as possible.

Geeks for Kids solves this problem by making custom mobility devices, but the program has hit a speed bump. After building 400+ cars on a base made by Fisher Price, the company has discontinued manufacturing toy cars. Now, in the midst of their build season, Geeks for Kids must redesign and retool their work to fit a new, less-robust base car.

We are pitching in to help Geeks for Kids fix some of the car's shortcomings. We will prototype an improved frame, roll bar, battery holder, steering system, and motor housing to enhance efficiency and safety for the children.

We aim to raise $3,270 to fund the design and fabrication of these improvements. Any remaining donations will be carried forward to help support next year's team to ensure this mission continues to touch lives and provide children with freedom to play.

The Pittsburg State University Geeks for Kids team kindly appreciates your consideration and support. Your contribution helps kids with movement limitations to have the #Power2Play. It will also give our team valuable and real-world engineering experience.
